It’s Never Safe To Drive On Damaged Rims

We’re highly experienced at selling car tyres in Auckland. Because of that, we know just about everything there is to know about tyres and wheels, and that includes rims. The rim is the large metal circle on which we place the tyre, so this makes it very important as far as your entire wheel and tyre set up is concerned. A common problem we see is cracked rims, and while many motorists think this is a superficial thing and not a major structural issue, we know otherwise.

One of the most obvious dangers with a cracked rim is the potential for a tyre blowout. As you’re probably aware, a blowout can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, which can lead to a nasty accident that will endanger you or those around you. To minimise the chances of a  blowout, you need to ensure your wheel rims don’t have cracks in them. The thing is, cracks are not always obvious so here are a few things to watch out for:

  • If you hear a thumping sound while you’re driving, or feel vibrations through the steering wheel than you’re used to, then you may have a cracked rim. If you do notice these signs, pull over to the side of the road once it is safe to do so and inspect your tyres. Remember, any damage might not be easy to spot so we recommend you play it safe and seek advice from wheel and tyre experts like us. That thumping sound and extra vibrations are signs of some sort of problem, so mechanical assistance will be required anyway.
  • Other indicators of a cracked rim could include your vehicle pulling to one side, or higher fuel consumption than usual. Again, these might not be symptoms of a damaged rim but they are sure signs that all is not well with your car and it should be looked at by mechanics.

In most cases, a cracked rim cannot be repaired and the entire wheel may have to be replaced.  Bent rims can sometimes be repaired, but a cracked rim has the potential to cause all sorts of damage, not to mention accidents, so a safety-first approach is best. Having your vehicle inspected at a place like ours will give you peace of mind and ensure you’re driving on safe rims and tyres. We can’t overstate the importance of a fully functioning wheel and tyre set up, so contact us today and let us check things out for you.
