Your Summer Service Checklist

Your Summer Service Checklist

Now that the sun is coming out and the days are getting longer, we know you’ll be itching to get on the road and explore. Before you go anywhere this summer, please get in touch with us at Drury Tyres.  We’ll do the best car service in South Auckland and will ensure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy while you chase the sun.

You might think your car is AOK, but there is a lot to take into consideration especially if you’re about to do a long road trip. You don’t want to end up broken down and stranded in some isolated spot simply because you overlooked this summer service checklist,

  • Air conditioning. If you haven’t used it over winter, it might be a good idea to ensure it is still working at optimum efficiency and is able to keep you cool over summer.
  • Cooling system. Your car needs to stay cool as well. Did you know that overheated engines are one of the leading causes of breakdowns over summer? Your cooling system and the condition of the coolant should be checked. If you are checking the coolant yourself, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has completely cooled!
  • Oil and filter change. You should not only change your oil before your summer travels but your oil filter as well. This should be done as specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual but if you do a lot of “stop-start” driving in traffic, or go on short drives regularly, you may want to change it even more frequently.
  • Windshield wipers. Hot days can dry and crack your wipers, especially the cheaper and generic ones. Check them out monthly to prevent performance issues.
  • Lights. These can be checked by yourself to a large degree. Walk around your vehicle and inspect for dirt residue or buildup. Only clean with a moist cloth as a dry one will leave scratches that affect visibility. Obviously, you need to replace any dim or burnt-out bulbs.
  • Brakes. If you feel softness or pulsing when applying pressure to your brakes, get them checked straight away. In fact, they are so important that we recommend you get them inspected anyway.
  • Battery. While no specific season will impact your battery’s performance, you won’t get far if your battery doesn’t work. Like brakes, it is something to get checked frequently and now is as good a time as any. Look out for signs of corrosion or loss of fluid (if the battery caps are removable). Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection, and avoid contact with corrosion or battery acid.
  • Tyres. Another big one and we obviously can help you. Ask us to do a general check of your tyres, including tread, pressure and overall wear and tear. Ask us to do a tyre rotation too – this will ensure they wear down evenly, and you get the most efficient performance from them. Be sure to also inspect your spare tyre and your jack too.

For pretty much everything on that summer checklist, we have the tyres and a fully equipped workshop. We’ll ensure your vehicle is in the best shape before your road trip. Happy motoring!
