5 Signs Indicating That You Need New Tyres
Tyres are one of the most important components of cars in terms of safety and drivability. They are responsible for traction, grip, braking distance, comfort, fuel efficiency and more. At Drury Tires, we remind our customers of the critical aspect of vehicle maintenance that is often neglected: regularly checking the condition of your tyres. Tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, and as such, they can significantly impact your driving experience. Here are five signs indicating that you need new tyres:
1. Worn-out Tyre Tread
The most obvious sign that it’s time to replace your tyres is worn-out tread. In New Zealand, the minimum legal depth is 1.5mm and all tyres have tread indicators that let you know when the tread has reached the minimum depth. If you notice the tread depth is below this mark, your car is not road worthy. If you are approaching the minimum, it’s time to renew yours. Driving on worn-out tyres increases your risk of accidents, reduces your car’s handling and your stopping ability.
2. Tyre Cracks or Bulges
If you see cracks or bulges on your tyre sidewall, it’s time to replace them. Cracks indicate ageing and exposure to weather elements such as Auckland’s harsh sunlight, while bulges are a sign of internal tyre damage. Both can cause tyre blowouts, leading to accidents.
3. Vibrations
When driving, if you feel constant vibrations during driving, it could be a sign of tyre wear or damage. Tyres that are out of balance or misaligned can cause vibrations, leading to an uncomfortable ride. Replacing your tyres will help you enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride.
4. Tyre Age
Even if your tyres appear to be in good condition, they may need replacing due to age. Rubber tyres can start to degrade after 6 years, even if they haven’t been used much. If your tyres are more than six years old, bring them to Drury Tires for a free tyre assessment.
5. Reduced fuel efficiency
Worn-out or under-inflated tyres can reduce your car’s fuel efficiency, costing you more as the engine has to work harder to accommodate the increased road resistance. If you notice your fuel consumption is up, check your tyre PSI and tread. Whilst buying new tyres is an expense, it may be more cost-effective than keeping worn tyres that are increasing your fuel consumption.
