Whatβs Included in a WOF Inspection
A Warrant of Fitness check covers all the safety essentials required under New Zealand law. At Drury Tires, we take it seriously and inspect every key system for faults, wear and compliance.
Tyres and wheels: We check for legal tread depth, damage, uneven wear, and correct inflation
Brakes: This includes both front and rear brake performance and pad thickness
Suspension: We assess shocks, springs, struts and their overall stability
Steering system: Play, alignment, and connection points are checked for responsiveness and safety
Seatbelts and restraints: We inspect retraction, locking mechanisms and mounting points
Lighting and visibility: All headlights, brake lights, indicators, fog lamps, wipers, and mirrors must be working and clear
Chassis and structure: We look for rust, cracks, or other damage that may affect structural safety
Exhaust and fuel system: Weβll check for leaks, noise and emissions compliance
Doors, bonnet and boot: These must open, close and latch securely
Glass and windscreen: Must be intact and free from obstructive chips or cracks
Common Reasons for WOF Fails
Most WOF failures come down to regular wear and minor neglect. These are the usual suspects:
- Worn tyres: Often below the legal 1.5mm tread depth or showing sidewall damage
- Brake issues: Pads, discs or fluid levels not meeting required standards
- Lighting faults: Blown bulbs or misaligned headlights are easy to overlook
- Suspension wear: Leaking shocks or worn-out bushings affect handling and control
- Damaged windscreens or wipers: Anything that hinders clear visibility can trigger a fail.
The good news? We can handle most of these in-house. From replacing tyres and wiper blades to brake servicing and mechanical repairs, weβll help get you road-ready without delay.
WOF Frequency & Vehicle Age
How often your vehicle needs a WOF depends on when it was first registered. Hereβs the current breakdown:
- Brand new vehicles that have never been registered before get a WOF valid for three years from the date of first registration.
- Vehicles registered less than two years ago will get a WOF that lasts until their third βbirthdayβ (the third anniversary of registration).
- Vehicles registered more than two years ago, but less than three years ago, get a WOF valid for 12 months.
- All vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2000 require a WOF every 12 months from then on.
