COMMON TYRE DAMAGES AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM
Damaged tyres always come at the most inconvenient of times. Not only are they terribly untimely, but they can also put your car and self in danger. Don’t let yourself get put out by suddenly needing to replace a tyre.
Instead, understanding common ways tyres can be damaged, and taking measures to prevent it from happening is a far better option!
Here’s our hand guide on common tyre damages and how to prevent them:
WEAR AND TEAR
All tyres will begin to wear eventually, and require replacement – but some tyres will wear quicker than others. Low quality tyres are guaranteed to wear out quickly, costing you more money in the long run. Travelling at high speeds, often or braking at a high speed and also cause heavy damage to your tyres. If you are carrying extremely heavy loads in a smaller vehicle you are also at risk of your tyres wearing out quickly. You can prolong the life of your tyres with regular maintenance and checking on their condition intermittently.
TYRE MISALIGNMENT
Tyres that are misaligned are easy to spot. Tyres that are not aligned correctly will wear more on one side than the other. This uneven wear will mean your tyre will completely wear out on one side, very quickly, and if it’s not replaced, you’ll end up with a flat tyre. That’s why it’s important to get your tyres aligned correctly.
TYRE HAZARDS
Road hazards are one of the most common ways tyres become quickly and easily damaged. Rough roads, pot holes, or running over sharp debris on the road can quickly turn into an unsafe situation, and it can also be a nuisance. While sometimes road hazards are unavoidable, it pays to keep your eyes on the road at all times, and to ensure that your driveway and garage is free of hazards, both big and small. Even a nail on the ground is enough to damage your tyre.
OVER/UNDER INFLATION
If you aren’t checking your tyres regularly, they may become underinflated for a long period of time. This results in internal heat building up in your tyre that can cause the tyre to weaken, and the tread to wear unevenly. Over inflation can also wear out the tyre’s centre, and in hot weather, and high speeds your tyre is at risk of bursting, which can be extremely dangerous to you and drivers around you. Always check, and stick to the recommended inflation pressure for your vehicle.
